The Returned and Services League has some 1500 Sub-Branches through out Australia and with a membership of 240,000, is one of the largest service and ex-service associations in Australia.

Who can join the RSL?

The RSL offers two main forms of membership, Service, (for those who have served in the Armed Forces), and Affiliate membership, (for those related to people eligible for Service Membership).

Further Sub-Branch Membership Types

The Frankston RSL offers a further two levels of membership including: Social & Community. Social Membership is for those that would like to be a part of their local RSL Sub-Branch on a social level and the Community membership is purely a form of membership without rights. The Community Membership allows for access to the venue for social purposes without the need to sign in.

What does it cost?

Membership to the RSL costs $30 for Service, Affiliate and Social and $10 for Associate*. Pensioners membership is discounted to $25 for Service, Affiliate and Social memberships. Community membership is $2.

* Associate membership requires proof of financial status at another RSL sub-branch.

service membership

The RSL is Australia's largest, most influential and effective ex-service organisation. The league provides its members with professional assistance in a range of matters including:

• DVA or MCRS entitlement claims
• Financial problems (conditions apply)
• Advocacy
• Service records and medal entitlements
• VRB and AAT applications
• Bereavement support
• Accommodation
• Funeral arrangements

Further to this, as a service member of the RSL you will be joining an organisation of over 200, 000 members Australia wide which can exert significant influence over government policy on a range of defence and service related issues. As a service member of the league you will also be entitled to the following:

• Full voting rights
• The ability to stand for any elected position within the RSL in Victoria, from a Sub-Branch committee to State President
• Full access to members facilities and prices at over 70 licensed RSL venues throughout Victoria
• The right to wear the time honoured RSL badge
• The opportunity to continue to enjoy the spirit of comradeship experienced during your service in the armed forces with other serving or ex defence force members
• A quarterly journal through which you can keep in touch with issues relevant to league members
• Discounts on a wide range of electrical appliances, whitegoods and computers
• The opportunity to participate in a number of RSL sporting and social activities

Criteria for Service Membership

• Has served in any of the Australian defence forces in any conflict
• Has served not less than 6 months in the regular or reserve Australian defence force
• Has completed a period of national service in the Australian defence force
• Has served in the defence forces of any country that is a part of the Commonwealth
• Has served in the defence forces of the United States of America
• Is an Australian citizen and has served in the defence force of any country allied to Australia

affiliate membership

Affiliate membership is a type of RSL membership that caters for family members of serving and ex-service men and women. Its purpose is to provide a form of RSL membership that maintains the 'bloodlines' of those who have served their country in both peace and war.

What are the benefits of Affiliate Membership?

• Receipt of a journal, (MUFTI), through which you can keep in touch with issues and events relevant to the RSL
• The opportunity to share in the spirit of comradeship common to those who have served in the Armed Forces
• The ability to serve on Sub-Branch committees
• Discounts on a wide range of electrical appliances, computers and whitegoods, (courtesy of Clive Peeters stores).
• The opportunity to participate in a range of RSL sporting and social activities
• The right to vote on most matters pertaining to the Sub-Branch of which you are a member.
• Leadership opportunities. The League needs people who can accept the responsibility and the challenge of undertaking a leadership role in a variety of areas, including welfare, memorabilia, recruiting, fundraising, etc. Many Affiliate members currently serve as Sub-Branch Secretaries or Treasurers.
• Full access to members facilities and prices at over 80 licensed RSL venues throughout Victoria
• The opportunity to make a difference in the care and remembrance of those who have served us in both war and peace.
• The right to wear the RSL Affiliate badge.

Criteria for Affiliate Membership

(Please note: Affiliate Membership is available in Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia only).

Any person who:

• Has served a minimum of 6 months in the police force, fire brigade, ambulance service, or state emergency service.
• Is over the age of 18 who is a relative of any ordinary or life member of the league
• Is related to a person who at the time of his/her death was eligible to be a member of the league.
• A child of an ex-service man or woman

social membership

Social Membership is for those that would like to be a part of their local RSL Sub-Branch on a social level. Social Membership provides for the same benefits as Service and Affiliate members, however the right to vote on RSL matters does not apply.
